Tolhuin, the Heart of the Island
Tolhuin is located 98 km from the Fuegian capital and 105 km from Rio Grande. This urban center is located at the head of Lake Khami, or Lake Fagnano, which is the largest on the island and has an east-west orientation, as is the mountain range at the southernmost end.
In 2012, the municipality of Tolhuin acquired its status as a municipality, taking into account that in the 2010 National Population Census had a population of 3004 inhabitants.
The heart of the island represents the transition from the montane forest to the south with the northern steppe plain. Where mountain hills are combined with lakes, vegas, mallines and turbals. Also, typical species of the forests of lenga and ñire coexist with those of rangelands. Nearby natural attractions, such as the Provincial Reserves Corazón de la Isla, Laguna Negra and Río Valdez, provide visitors with a unique postcard accessing lagoons, forests, cliffs, streams and turbals, through activities such as horseback riding, hiking and fishing. The whimsical topography has generated an extremely picturesque city that combines colours and unevenness, accompanied by a growing population.
Owner of unlimited natural charm, the small town boasts a combination of unique landscapes and unexplored spaces. The Heart of the Islandinvites you to experience.
What to do
Here the predominance of the forest subAntarctic shows three main species. The lenga, the guindo and the ñire with heights between 17 and 30 meters. Going down to the colorful bushes, you can see the calafate, whose particular legend says that he who eats the fruit will return to Tierra del Fuego. Near the ground is the provincial flower, the bell of extraordinary beauty, like orchids and gold buttons.
The fauna is characterized by having few terrestrial and marine mammals. Among the most important, the gray fox and red, guanaco, rabbit and mink on land. In the sea whales orcas, sea lions and Antarctic and sub-Antarctic seals make the delight of the visitor.
The distinction at this point is the introduction of the beaver in 1947 by the Navy to promote the fur industry. The manufacture did not prevail and the animal adapted incredibly to the area modifying the spaces in a surprising way. They can be seen on any excursion or trip through the protected areas of Tierra del Fuego.
A separate chapter is the abundant birds in the area, migratory and endemic birds. They marvel at their flights, guttural sounds, colorful and showy features. You can see oysters from the south, carancas cauquenes, black brow albatross, creston ducks and overalls, petrels Divers, macáes, Patagonian carpenters.
