The most spectacular landscape that Mendoza offers is that of any mirror of water among the mountains, in the Cordillera de Los Andes. Such is the postcard that gives, for example, the well-known Laguna del Diamante, which can be discussed at another time. Or the Potrerillos dam, perhaps the best known. However, in this note, we speak of a less recognized gap. Some Mendoza don’t even know about its existence. In the deep mountain of San Rafael overlooks the Sosneado Lagoon.

The Way

It is located 330 kilometers south-west of the city. The journey to this place is already an absolute must-see attraction. On asphalt we leave south on Route 40, about 100 kilometers to the town of Pareditas, in San Carlos. There begins the best, detour to the west and dirt road to the south, parallel to the majestic mountain range, with streams and eternal straights, although with some winding sectors, typical mountain paths. In total, this stretch is 160 kilometers, where the intense blue of the Mendoza sky meets the peaks of the most imposing peaks. A delight.

This journey ends in the town of El Sosneado, already in the department of San Rafael. There’s a gas station there and it’s the last supply we can find. From there it is 45 kilometers inland to the lagoon, following the path of the Atuel River, one of the most important and abundant in our province.

It is important to mention that it is recommended to perform all the travel on vehicles suitable for motorcycles or 4 x 4 x 4. However, if we arm ourselves with patience, cars can also arrive.

The lagoon

After all this walking, we arrived at our destination. An imposing green space, with vegetation atypical for the area and with the lagoon as the central axis. Native fauna and stalls welcome us. However, the plan does not end there. A few kilometres further west we find the abandoned hotel, with the hot spring pool on the side. While the hotel looks totally sloppy and barely ruined, the pool and hot springs continue to emerge. So visitors take advantage of and take a relaxing natural bath.
