Tips to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier

The Perito Moreno Glacier is the third largest freshwater reserve on the planet and captivates with its beauty. We leave you tips to visit it.

Santa Cruz

The Perito Moreno Glacier is the third largest freshwater reserve on the planet. It is so immense that you have to see it live to understand its magnitude: 30 kilometers long, 5 in width and a height that reaches 60 meters. It is one of the few ice tongues on the planet that keeps its unstoppable advance. As if this were not enough, it possesses an indescribable beauty. Many visitors stay ashore, but the more adventurous explore the interior on small boats or even walking.

First things first: how to get to the  glacier ?

You have three options:
  • On an excursion with a tourism agency in El Calafate.
  • Taking the bus. On the official website of Turismo de El Calafate you can find the service schedules.
  • Renting a car. The attraction of this option is that you can stay on the glacier as long as you want. From El Calafate on Route 11 is 80 kilometers to the Perito Moreno glacier.
Now, we leave you some useful tips to enjoy your visit to the Perito Moreno glacier.
  •  Wear warm clothes . You're in  Patagonia  in front of a gigantic glacier. It's cold and there's a lot of chances of rain. Wear warm clothes (including hat and gloves) and waterproof
  •  Opt for comfortable shoes . The walkways in front of the glacier add up to 4 kilometers and will take you 300 meters from the glacier. You will be walking and moving, opt for comfortable shoes that keep your feet warm.
  •  Use sunscreen . Even if it's cloudy, the solar radiation in those latitudes is high. Wear a blocker and sunglasses.
  •  Take your vianda.  There is a bar-restaurant next to the walkways where you can have a  coffee  to warm up. Of course, the products there are more expensive, so it's a good idea to take some snack from El Calafate.
  •  Get ready to take pictures . If you are a  photography lover, we recommend that you take with you a wide-angle lens for general photos and a telephoto lens to capture details.
