Why is Perito Moreno Glacier the eighth wonder of the world?
In 2011, an international competition was held organized by the company New Open World Corporation. The goal was to recognize those natural places of the world that stood out for their extraordinary beauty. 400 sites were presented, of which were selected by the public only 7 natural wonders. The Iguazú Falls in the province of Misiones is one of them. However, our country hides one more wonder. Located in El Calafate, Santa Cruz province, the Perito Moreno Glacier is the eighth wonder of the world. That’s what the data and the people say.
3 facts that make it a wonder of the world
- Let’s start by saying that the Perito Moreno Glacier records the most important influx of foreign tourists to our country . Data from a report made by Despegar.com corroborates this. The most chosen options for summer holidays by foreigners are Buenos Aires, El Calafate and Ushuaia.
- Although Perito Moreno is the most famous, it is only one of the glaciers that form Los Glaciares National Park. All of them are part of the Patagonian Continental Ice. That’s 17,000 miles in length! Which makes it one of the most important drinking water reserves in the world, after Antarctica and Greenland.
- The pressure of the liquid mass leaks into the ice and creates a fantastic vaulted tunnel. The collapse of this vault is an unusual natural spectacle and is one of the main attractions of the park. Especially since those breaks only happen every four and a half years!
