Every year, in Puerto Deseado, province of Santa Cruz, the Undersecretary of Municipal Tourism organizes activities in Plaza del Vagón. The Railway Car opens its doors to welcome tourists with guided tours, activities for children and microcinema, constituting a necessary time to remember and get excited.

A secret story

The Booked Railway Car No. 502 was built in 1898 in Lancaster, England. Around 1910 he arrived in Patagonia Argentina, more precisely to Puerto Deseado, there, in 1922 he acquired the denomination of “Car Reserved No. 502”, the same was due to the fact that this wagon was used exclusively for railway authorities and illustrious figures of the time.

The Historic Wagon that belonged to the former Patagonian railway and then to the management of the Roca Railway, covered the 285-kilometer stretch comprising between Puerto Deseado and Colonia Las Heras for approximately seven decades.

This old, historic 121-year-old wagon, was part of the rolling stock of the Puerto Deseado Railway – Colonia Las Heras, who during the years 1920/1921 was a participant in the events that occurred during the Patagonian Strikes. In 1974 it was used for filming the film based on Osvaldo Bayer’s book “La Patagonia Rebelde”, being abandoned with the closure of the railway line in 1978, until 1980 the rolling stock was sold.

Thus, the railway was a key tool that accelerated the process of occupation of fiscal land and was an engine of growth for the economic activities of the territory, although it did not motivate, on the other hand, the economic and productive diversification of the area.

Puerto Deseado had a privileged place on this branch since the commercial and port activities had as epicenter this coastal city and, on the other hand, because the railway workshops were installed there, generating not only significant economic activity but also the railway had a important role in the social life of Deseandenses; this memory still remains alive in the memory of those protagonists who lived with joy every arrival and departure of the train.

That is why on December 18, 1980, in the midst ofthe military dictatorship, a true village rescues this icon of history, declaring it of public utility and subject to expropriation, empowering the Executive Power to transfer it to the Municipality of Puerto Deseado, for the purposes of preservation as a monument Provincial Historical.
