Meet the El Leoncito National Park

Calingasta has the privilege of hosting paradisiacal places such as El Leoncito National Park, a large protected natural area that has one of the most diaphanous skies in the world.

The Leoncito National Park, preserved for years as a strict reserve, is located on the western foothills of the precordillera sanjuanina. You can see different landscapes and the place surprises us with the variety of natural life.
In El Leoncito Park you can see a lot of flora and fauna. The cuis boy and the rabbit snake run between challenge and jarillas. Chinchillón and reptiles, like lizard and lizard, choose rocky slopes for sunbathing. The tropillas of guanacos or groups of suri cordilleranos are seen only in the swamps or in the extensive plains. Sometimes, you can see the red fox and very rarely let a puma be seen. If your gaze is raised to the heights, you will surely observe the flight of some harrier or the gliding of a blackberry eagle.

In El Leoncito there are strong gusts of dry winds. The climate is arid. Rarely vegetation is watered by rains. Its sky, transparent and clear most of the year, made possible the installation of the El Leoncito Astronomical Complex (known as CASLEO) and the Carlos Urrico Cesco Observatory.

You can get to know the two observatories through a guided day tour, but the best of these establishments can be experienced when you make a night visit. As, through the telescope, radiant stars, mysterious planets and restless satellites suspended in the clear San Juanino sky are observed.
El Leoncito National Park is a place to enjoy, different landscapes and sensations are perceived in each of the seasons of the year. In summer, the creek and Cascada El Rincón offer a cool and restful rest. In autumn, typical rows of yellowish poplars are seen, which are covered with white with winter snow. And in spring, the cheerful colors of swamps and soft sounds of animals reveal to us the flowering of natural life.
