The province of Salta is the only one in our country to own more than 650 species of birds, accounting for 65% of those registered in Argentina. For this reason Birdwatching lovers from all regions arrive in Salta to enjoy this heterogeneity.
The Huaico Nature Reserve protects a remnant of mountain forest in excellent state of conservation, very close to Villa San Lorenzo, just 20 km from Salta city airport.
It is a private reserve that belongs to the Yuchan Foundation, an NGO that works in the conservation of Yungas, Chaco and the North Argentine Andes. The place is framed in an area of 51 hectares of cloud forest, where scientific research, environmental education and ecotourism is also carried out. A place to recreate among a jungle vegetation that embraces the visitor. In each of its paths you can enjoy the sounds of waterfalls, the running of rivers and of course the birdlife of the place.
The visit to the reserve is always accompanied by a guide from the Foundation who will help the visitor, novice or expert in birdwatching to observe and learn about the birds that inhabit the incredible environment of this mountain jungle. The proposal can be both half day or full day. In any case the trails run the lower area to the elevations of this cloud forest. The Huaico Nature Reserve has 220 registered species, among which are colourful parrots, saffron finch and hummingbirds, among others.
Near noon, you reach the so-called surveillance deck of the raptor, from where you can see the Andean condor or the majestic black and chestnut eagle. They are rare species to do with what patience is needed to see them. In the meantime the visitor will enjoy the swallowed tail kites, short-tailed hawks and the timid forest falcon.
That is the last stop for half day departure, who opts for Full Day, after frugal lunch you travel to the Sianca Valley, another protected wetland. Here you can see a large concentration of waterfowl here, including pink billed duck, white and brown cheeks, Brazilian and lake ducks, white-faced ibis, herons and storks.
It is open from January to September. It is recommended to wear hat or cap, sunscreen, insect repellent. In addition to drinking water for the whole stay Comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for hiking.
