What you didn't know about the museums in Rio Negro

Museums are small universes that show what we are or were, what we do or did and how we relate to the environment.

Río Negro

The province of Río Negro, in Patagonia Argentina, has museums throughout its territory. Each with its specific theme and approaches that are of great interest to the tourist who visits the territory. Ideal for lovers to approach the history and culture of the place where you are on holiday. A way to recover the past and the present for the local neighbors.

What you didn't know about the museums in Rio Negro

We chose just a few for you to book on your next trip to Patagonia. Let's start this tour in the Cordillera de los Andes. In a rural area with 65 inhabitants called Mallín Ahogado, very close to  El Bolson.   The  Museum of Piedras Patagonicas  treasures a rich and varied compilation of stones and minerals. Some of the pieces on display is unique in the world. The place allows you to make a geological and temporal tour through the different areas of the Patagonian region. The collection also includes 19 specimens of meteorites. Another sector is malacology, with fossil and current invertebrates. The paleobotany section has specimens inside the hall and is part of the route of the Geological Theme Park outside, with petrified trunks of large size and rarity.

We all know that there is no tourist visiting San Carlos de Bariloche and returning home without chocolates. And that's why I couldn't miss a  Chocolate Museum in that city. There, through guided tours, samples of objects and tastings, you can learn about the history, cultural influence and processes of elaboration of this delicious product that we are so passionate about.

From Bariloche and by RN 23 you reach Valcheta, one of the oldest towns in the Province of Río Negro. There is the  María Inés Kopp Museum  which is one of the most important in the province and houses among its collections archaeological, geological and paleontological pieces that allow recreating the region's past. It protects fossil remains of a petrified forest, eggs and dinosaur bones, as well as objects from the Puelche village that lived in the region before the Araucana invasion of the 19th century. Also of the first settlers settled in the area.

Patagonian Museum of Natural Sciences

In the Rio Negro Valley there are three museums that deserve to be visited. In General Roca, the Patagonian Museum of Natural Sciences, which has collections that safeguard the natural and paleontological heritage of the region. It presents visitors with a tour and didactic and modern stories about the biological and geological richness of Patagonia. One of its paleontological jewels is the Aerotitan, a unique pterosaur in South America that lived 73 million years ago.

In Allen there is the City Museum, which operates in the building of the old railway station of the city. Through temporary exhibitions and permanent displays of different objects, furniture, photographs and documents, he rescues and recreates the lives of the first settlers and immigrants who arrived in the Alto Valle area.

 Historical Museum of Irrigation

Finally, in the town of Barda del Medio, on the left bank of the river Neuquén, is the Historical Museum of Riego. This museum bears witness to the work and effort involved in the construction of the Ballester Dk, fundamental to the development of the Upper Valley. The story of this gigantic work, which thanks to the adaptation of the waters of the Neuquén River turned the desert into productive lands. All this can be seen in the collections of objects, plans, photographs, machinery and documents of the time.
