The lagoon where more animal species coexist

Llancanelo lagoon is located in Malargüe. There are more than 150 animal species throughout the reserve. Although, sometimes, they don't show up.

 laguna de Llancanelo

From a scientific point of view, the Llancanelo lagoon is an ideal  Nature Reserve  .  It allows you to study with tranquility and careful the huge variety of animal and plant species that live in it . However, from the tourist point of view, the experiences are disparate.  Some people have returned dumped by the landscape, water and animals  seen. However  , many others have returned dumped by the little water and the couple of flamingos they have been able to contemplate .

 The lagoon

At 75 kilometres from the city of Malargüe you will find this unforgettable landscape . Its waters are salty and feeds mainly on the river of the same name, as well as the Carilauquen, Carapacho, Menucos, Mocho and Malo streams, and an important flow of groundwater. It is a  wetland  where we can observe a lot of birds, many of them are migratory, like flamingos, and choose this environment to nest. Because of its important ecological value,  it has been a provincial reserve since 1980, and the international environmental community has also declared it a RAMSAR site. This is that, internationally, the lagoon must be cared for and studied for its huge variety of species.

Llancanelo, which means  “teal pearl”,  is the right place to spot a variety of birds  (there are 155 census species)  , take a lot of photos, enjoy the beauty of nature, the tranquility of the landscape and an unforgettable sunset. Also,  if weather conditions allow, and the road is enabled, the “Trapal Volcano” is visited.  It can be climbed and, after an ascent of about 60 minutes, you will reach a place from where you get a breathtaking panoramic view of the Reserve.

The area consists of vegas, bathed, swamps and a clean salt water lagoon, constituting a wetland of vital importance for species that migrate to some intermediate point along the route Alaska-Tierra del Fuego.

Attracting those who are passionate about sighting and photographic safaris, the lagoon offers the natural spectacle of contemplating the  colorful flamingos, black-necked swans, cowls and herons.

One of the biggest threats facing the protected area is the decrease in water mass, resulting in a visible retraction of the lagoon and wetland.  This is the result of the scarcity of rainfall and the   decrease in the flow of theMalargüe River  , whose waters come from the melting of the Andean summits.

 Oil land

The region of the Llancanelo lagoon covers an oil field known since the first decades of the 20th century within the so-called  Cuyana Cuenca . While explicitly the province's environmental regulations prevent the exploitation of hydrocarbons within protected areas, various circumstances, including the lack or inaccuracy in the definition of boundaries, have led to conflicts and disputes over time which, in some cases, cases, reached the highest courts. At the same time, there are initiatives that seek to develop methodologies that allow extractive activity minimizing the risk of environmental impact.
