If we could describe the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, in Tilcara Jujuy , we should begin by highlighting the harmony of the construction with the Tilcareño landscape and surroundings. This is what falls in love with those who know her. Thus, it is one of the must-see in Northern Argentina.
Inside it shelvers important works of art that when entering give a particular touch to this temple that many describe as the right point between simplicity and beauty. All this in harmony, of course, with the landscapes and the people that give it the particular color and touch.
Getting to know it is a very good plan for those who are sightseeing around the Quebrada de Humahuaca area. The pucara de Tilcara is another icon that the city has to offer tourists. Both options are nearby and you can walk around. It is recommended to spend to meet them by day to take advantage and observe them with the mountains in the background.
The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary was born at the end of the 17th century, the desire arises from Father Joseph Alexo de Alverro, who in 1797 asked to build the temple. History indicates that by 1853 the Church was in poor condition. Seven years later, when Tilcara was elected the seat of the curatum, the temple was refurbished.
The frontis has a colonial-style portal, the choir window and ends with a semicircular balustrade. It has two rectangular towers with pinnacles, one of them is the bell tower, which top with a spherical dome with octagonal base. That detail is added in the reform of 1941.
The nave is on one floor, with a gable roof with wooden frame, a beautiful altarpiece and altar made of the same material as the walls, typical of the chapels of Northern Argentina. The central niche contains an ancient image of Our Lady of the Rosary. Impresses the Crucified Christ made in pasta, a wonderful technique that comes from native cultures.
The Church has a large number of works of high artistic value, six paintings from the Cuzco school wear its walls, true centuries-old works of art. There are passages from the life of the Virgin Mary.
Inside the temple rest the remains of Colonel Manuel Álvarez Prado, the biggest defender of the Tilacareña land in front of the Spanish invader. His gesture, considered at the same level as Güemes, curbing the realistic advance at a time when our country dreamed of its independence.
Tilcara is located in the Quebrada de Humahuaca, at an altitude of 2465 masl, on one side of National Route 9 and Rio Grande. Access is very easy for those who want to get there by car.
The distances from Tilcara are: San Salvador de Jujuy 85 kilometers, Purmamarca 26; Humahuaca 45 and Salta 202 kilometers.
It can also be reached by bus or remis from San Salvador de Jujuy. And there is a collective service between the towns of La Quebrada.
