Salinas Grandes, Argentina's great salt desert spanning the territories of Salta and Jujuy, was recently covered with a thin layer of water in the area of its tourist portal of la puna jujeña, which generated greater interest from visitors to see them with this unique aspect due to the recent rains.
Since the summer storms began in the Quebrada and the Puna de Jujuy area -the previous week- much of this desert became a sea of a few centimeters of crystal clear water, which is visited by about 800 tourists per day, who walk, have fun and take pictures of this variable of the landscape .
“Much of the surface of the salt flat remains approximately five centimeters of water,” Jujujuño journalist Daniel Salas told Télam today, adding that “it is now raining down the Quebrada,” so the seasonal phenomenon will persist more days.
Salas explained that “if the precipitation continues, this incredible attraction will remain, otherwise, the intense heat in Puneño will evaporate the water allowing the crystallization of salt.”
The water will clean the environmental dust in that windy area, 3,600 meters above sea level, and when it evaporates “the salt flats will be immaculately white, ideal for taking pictures and enjoying one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Argentina,” he added.
The Salinas Grandes are located on RN 52, which reaches the Paso de Jama (Paso Internacional Argentina-Chile). The journey starts from the town of Purmamarca and before reaching the salt flats you must cross the Cuesta de Lipán, with a maximum height of 4,170 meters. The route is paved and is in very good condition. There is no public transport to Salinas Grandes, but different travel agencies organize excursions.
