Patagonia is a land where the senses are sharpened. Its landscapes, its vegetation, its aromas, as well as the richness of its customs and traditions make it always an excellent choice when it comes to traveling around Argentina.
Lago Puelo , a small town located in the northwest of the province of Chubut, is no exception. It is located at the foot of the wonderful Cordillera de los Andes in a beautiful low-rise valley, where is the same name, a crystal clear lake that impresses with the colour of its turquoise waters. It is undoubtedly a real natural jewel. As well as an ideal place for lovers of outdoor activities.
The beauty of the place is protected within the Lago Puelo National Park , which was created in 1937 and covers more than 27,000 hectares. This reserve is characterized by the combination of being a transition zone between the Patagonian Andean Forest and the Valdivian jungle, as it is located very close to the Chilean border. It is possible to observe the hill Currumahuida, as well as the hill Tres Picos, named for its summits formed by stone walls.
It presents a cold and humid climate during autumn and winter, so the best time to visit Lake Puelo is in spring and summer, where visitors who arrive have the possibility to enjoy the tranquility of the place and be enchanted by the natural greatness of one of the most national parks beautiful from Argentina. The star of the place during the summer is the area known as la playita del lago , an ideal place to enjoy the hot days and contemplate the views offered by this beautiful place.
It is possible to camp in the Park, as there is an area with two campsites. For those who want to visit and get to know other places, various excursions are offered, such as a lake excursion to head towards Los Hitos , which is the point that divides Argentina and Chile. It is a tour that fascinates visitors for being so close to so much nature. Another picturesque attraction is to tour the forest of shadows, where it is possible to admire the landscape with its specimens such as myrtle tree, pitra, ferns, among other varieties.
From Esquel it is 160 kilometers to Lago Puelo by RN 40. From the city of Bariloche, in the north, you travel 135 kilometers through this road to El Bolsón. Then travel 12 kilometers through the RP 16 until you reach the town of Lago Puelo, and from the center of the village Lago Puelo, four kilometers of gravel to the lake bank, within the Lago Puelo National Park.
