Faced with decades in which man destroyed fauna and flora in different parts of our country, in the province of Chaco it was only enough for a visionary to decide to protect a small area so that today we can enjoy a perfectly preserved environment.
This is the Colonia Benitez Strict Nature Reserve that, with only 10 hectares of land, keeps intact a representative sample of the environment known as Chaco humid or Chaco Oriental. It was created in 1965 thanks to the botanist Augusto Schulz, who promoted the closure of these lots, within an area designated to the INTA (National Institute of Agricultural Technology), to develop an Agricultural Experimental Station (EEA).
Schulz studied the 278 plant species present on the site and allowed this sector of the Chaco mountain to be preserved in excellent condition, which includes a quebrachal and humid grassland sectors.
In the Colonia Benitez Reserve there are three flora environments: a jungle area in gallery with large tree vegetation that occupies an ancient albumin of the river, an area with dense shrub vegetation and cactus on low and saline soils, and a permanently flooded depression that is occupied by an estuary. With regard to fauna, the small size of its surface prevents the development of large animal populations, which is why birds, amphibians and reptiles are seen.
A walk that is definitely worth taking.
