It is a phrase widely used in Mendoza and also true. All the places in our province were once vineyard.
With the colonizerscame the first vines to our country and Mendoza was chosen for its cultivation and industry. It is that the vineyard needs the climatic characteristics that are met in our province. The arid climate, temperatures and height are optimal for the development of winemaking. Thus, before the growth of small urban centers, there was a proliferation of vines everywhere .
So, a little more here in time, mid-20th century, the Mendoza had all contacts with a vineyard - Yeah . Either because their houses were in one, or because they knew someone who had a vineyard, or because their house was close to one. The truth is, the vines were everywhere. Over the years, more than one vineyard was enclosed between buildings and modern houses, because its owners refused to sell.
But nostalgia is present in more than one. It is very common for a grandfather to walk by car with his grandson anywhere in Mendoza and the first to stop to the side, look up to a large housing complex and exclaims: “Nico, before, all this, was a vineyard”, with glassy eyes and expanded corners.
To remember the vineyard is to remember the childhood of those who have already blown more than 50 candles. It's not just the vineyard, it's the games that were organized there with cousins and friends. It is to remember the nights spent with the grandparents, who were usually the owners of those lands. It is also to remember the experiences with the horses of the stable that every vineyard had.
That is why “all this was vineyard” is more than a phrase. Its connotation is rich in feelings. So, when you hear that a Mendoza says it, you should know that maybe it will be accompanied by a silence of a few seconds. Surely he will be working on his memory and imagination, escaping the dizzying reality and giving space to moments of relaxation.
