The fernet

In certain environments fernet is considered as the national drink of Argentina.


 El fernet  is an alcoholic beverage originally from France but popularized in Italy since the mid-nineteenth century, brought to the country by Italian immigrants. Bitter in taste, it is made with herbs such as chamomile, cardamom, rhubarb, saffron and others. This snack has an alcoholic content of 45°, is dark greenish and very aromatic. The creation of the Italian family Fratelli Branca gave the last name to the oldest known fernet in Buenos Aires, where it is tasted together with a coffee, mixed with soda, mineral water or integrating cocktails. Fernet has other indications as it has been used as a digestive for the treatment of baby's colic or menstrual pains.

The popularity of this bitter has not decreased as its consumption increased year after year. A very sought-after and popular combination with us is with cola drink. In certain environments fernet is considered as the national drink of Argentina. The fernet integrates the wide group of snacks, drinks obtained from herbs and macerated in alcohol, used before meals, with the purpose of “awakening appetite”, not forgetting that in other times, it was used as a medicinal elixir to prolong life. It promotes the secretion of gastric juices and prepares the stomach for digestion of the next meal, as long as it is not accompanied by the exaggerated ingestion of sausages, cheeses and fatty foods that cause an opposite effect, the famous  “ chopped” , with more calories than the food itself. The habit of taking a fernet or bitter, before the meal, was a healthy pretext for  meeting friends  in the café or on the tin of a bar, in that Buenos Aires yesterday.
