Public toilets

Those were good times: at least there were public toilets in that Buenos Aires yesterday.

In the first decade of the 20th century, they were located on Avenida de Mayo and in some corners of the micro center, which solved the trouble of the Buenos Aires.  They have been registered in old posters given by pharmaceutical laboratories, which we located, in the hospital office where we worked. The recorded image was excellent, showing different attitudes for each of the three males, in that photographic document taken from behind. Bathing houses were attended by the lack of people, workers who attended when they finished their tasks, those who lived in pensions and did not have access to the toilets, and even tourists, who wished to know a typical place of the city. Bathhouses had hot water, soap and towel. A lot of people were showering outside their house. Many did it on Saturday afternoon, in the municipal bath houses, located at Caseros 75 or Avenida Sáenz 3460. The public bathrooms had attached washrooms, totally free of charge and with an employee service in perfectly neat premises. Long queues of users waited patiently on Saturday evenings. On 8 May 1923, the Intendency issued the Ordinance to install the first public toilets. The Municipality installed them in the major squares and parks. They were underground. With an entrance similar to the entrances to underground stations. A concrete example was the one built in Plaza Lorea: 6 toilets, and 4 lavatories for women and 6 urgatory, 6 toilets and 4 washatories for men. It was accessed by a ladder for the men's sector and another for the women. I met one located in Ireland Square, opposite the Banking Polyclinic. The last public bath was closed in 1999. Those were good times, at least public toilets were available in that Buenos Aires yesterday.
