Miguel has known him since he was a girl. I lived with my family on the block and had little friends in the building. Those of us who are used to living in homes do not end up completely closing the function of the manager: if one can manage their own home without anyone's help, why would living in an apartment merit that figure?
The turns of life meant that, over the years, he ended up living in Miguel's building. So, I started to understand a little better. Beyond his specific tasks (balding, taking out the trash, etc.), Miguel has a symbolic function in the building: he greets you with a smile every day, all year round; solves you domestic questions and doubts; he knows everything and everyone, in the building and in the neighborhood.
Recently, he told me that he was already entering retirement age. When the consortium asked him what he intended to do, he said he wanted to continue working: that was his house, his work and his life. In times where managers are disappearing, replaced by cleaners by hours, people like Miguel make us remember that human relations are more than a number at the expense. And that a simple “good morning” can change our morning.
