I wrote! Reader NotesGo to section
My sister has been living outside for a few years and, like every emigrated, at times she's been assaulted by nostalgia. And, when an Argentine gets melancholic on the outside, only one thing comes to mind. That's why when I was planning my trip to visit her last year, she had an unoriginal and even less practical occurrence: I brought alfajores .
Of course I didn't take them for a lot of reasons I listed at the time. But I understood your need perfectly. Alfajor is one of the favorite treats of Argentines. In the country 900 million alfajores are consumed annually (that is, every Argentine eats — on average — 20 per year ). Imagine months, years!, without trying one. Of course I got it.
Not having the ease of going through a kiosk and craving with that treat must be hard. Not being able to enjoy it with a coffee or just walking down the street should be difficult. But it is also not easy to place a dozen alfajores in a suitcase or, worse, in a backpack.
I brought alfajores is a concrete desire and sometimes a perfect metaphor and difficult to explain. If you don't believe me, ask Garcé.
