If we are walking down the street and someone sees that we are about to put our foot in a puddle, it is likely to tell us just one word : save! If we bend down and run the risk of hitting our heads when we get up, the same term can alert us to the imminent danger. It would be like a “care”, a “look” or a “pay attention.” But why do you keep it ?
He who knows something about Italian will surely have the immediate answer: the verb guardare means, precisely, “look”. The expression is, then, one more of the legacies of Italian immigration, from which time I erased the origin and use retouched the conjugation ( guarda is actually the third person of the singular and not the second person).
A similar process suffered the term stubborn — a slight deformation of hard testa (“hard head”), to which we changed the order of some of the letters and turned it into an adjective by itself, which matches in gender and number with the character beareristica.
Every word that comes out of our mouth brings with it a story, an origin, a reason for being. Travel through time, through space, loads of meaning, recycled, mutates. And there it appears, at the exact moment when we need it — for example — to alert someone about some small everyday danger.
