Dithyrambic is an adjective that describes something “belonging to or relative to dityrambo ”. And what is a dityrambo ? According to the SAR, “ exaggerated praise”, an “ excessive commendation”. I mean, something dithyambic is something excessively praiseworthy or laudatory.
Of the unusual words for Argentines (which are many), this one has the peculiarity of looking a little like us. Where? Precisely in the “ exaggerated ” or “ excessive ”. Argentines say, among other things, that we are exitists , and it is precisely when we are in that way that we make use of all kinds of dithyambic expressions.
So, a footballer transforms into God and a rock band becomes invincible. A politician is the savior of the people and the CEO of a company is the undisputed guru of its employees. Our opinions are dithyrambic when good lasts and devastating when things start to get complicated.
We go in the sense that the wind blows and we have no intermediate points to express our feelings. We are exaggerated, excessive and extremist , and that is why an adjective like dithyambic is doing so well. It will be a matter, then, of incorporating it into our usual vocabulary to have it more at hand on those few occasions when we run out of words.
