Home People How we talk Chamuyeros and Chamuyados

Chamuyeros and Chamuyados

Sometimes more subtle, others more notorious, chamuyo is an Argentine skill.

How we talk

“ I was about to call you.”

“ I'm coming.”

“ Your order just got out there.”

“ I go and come.”

“ We have to fix to see each other, huh.”

“ It's not you, it's me.”

“ I'm staying at a friend's, ma.”

“ No, I don't have any more gum.”

“ I ran out of battery.”

“ Don't let it be cut!”.

The  chamuyo  we see him coming, we recognize him and, far from rejecting him, we embrace him. Everyone talks about the chamuyero, but nobody talks about the one who lets himself be chamuyar. While it is true that there are experts in the art of chamuyo, who can easily deceive us without us perceiving it, there are also universal chamuyos, established, which we all know are not true and, anyway, we let them pass.

Why do we do it? Why do we accept the lie? Maybe because it's “one for you and one for me.” Because there is an implicit consensus as to what extent it is okay to “put in a chamuyo” without it being considered something serious. Because sometimes you don't need to know the real reasons. Or because we like to believe it's true.

The reality is that we all shamuyy somehow, and that's why we allow it in the other. We let a  chamuyo  pass every so that, in our turn, they let it pass to us. Because we are all chamuyeros and chamuyados at our own time. Perhaps it is because the chamuyo does not have the lying entity for us: it is simply an escape, a slightly decorated reality.

Sometimes more subtle, others more notorious,  chamuyo  is an Argentine ability to make things bow a little more in our favor, so that the glass with which they are viewed is our color. Picardy, ingenuity and insight is what it takes to make a good chamuyo. And, too, to know how to recognize it.
