How to avoid weight gain during the holidays?

Believe it or not, you can go on vacation and go home without extra pounds.

Holidays are synonymous with lack of food and excesses of alcoholic beverages. I have taken the job of reading some research on the subject, and most agree on what happens when we go on vacation or on weekends with our food.

After spending more than two years studying the eating habits of thousands of people, Jeffrey Inman, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh, concluded that the quantity and quality of meals changes dramatically on weekends and during holidays .  In one study, Inman reveals that during the festivities we usually   consume hypercaloric foods and dishes far away from what the food pyramid recommends for a balanced and healthy diet.

Scientists from Vanderbilt University have come to a similar conclusion and warn that we eat more and worse on vacation. Finally, our dear Doctor Cormillot tells us about this topic: “Holidays are a period as pleasant as it is challenging for those who are taking care of their weight. Free time allows rest, relaxes and is healthy, but some people predisposes to transgress the boundaries which were put with food throughout the year. Therefore, a good challenge is to try to simply maintain the current weight. With that we can be satisfied and resume the intensity after the summer.”

Believe it or not, you can go on vacation and go home without extra pounds. First of all, eat in moderation (whatever it is). Incorporate some physical activity while the holiday lasts (more if we go to the beach), avoid sitting all day and going for a walk or running if we do it on a regular basis.

Let's avoid fast food and drinks that contain a lot of calories, choose first of all water and, if you do not like, some non-carbonated drink. From my point of view, no bans on holidays, but try to eat more fruits and vegetables. For example, I suggest you start with a cute multicolored salad (everything goes through the eyes), preferably olive oil, balsamic oil or vinegar or just lemon. When the time comes for the main dishes, let's go with vegetables instead of fries or mashed potatoes. If we can, let's avoid the bread box that tempts us so much.

When we get to dessert (so tempting time), let's watch carefully what we are going to ask for. The most recommended is a seasonal fruit or fruit salad, but in case you choose a dessert let's try to consult a member of the table if you want to share it.

As you will see, the ones I suggest are very small changes, but very benefits for our health. So, when we return from our vacation we will not have to be distressed by weight gain, and we will come home happy that we had a perfect stay.
