Go and cry at him!

When an Argentinian complains about something and his interlocutor can't or wants to help him, it is common for him to say “go cry a montoto”.

Andá a llorarle a montoto

Did someone ever send you a lot to complain? Do you know that the expression “go and cry in montoto” came from a true story? This Montoto is not a fictional character but was a person of flesh and blood.

Mario Montoto was an employee of Banco Provincia de Buenos Aires. A strict, honest and highly applied type in solving labor issues. As is normally said, an exemplary official.

For this reason, when there was a problem when cashing a check, the cashiers referred customers to Montoto, using the phrase “go cry to Montoto.” Because Mario always solved the problems in an effective way.

Did you know Mr. Montoto's story?
