Atomic energy, in the hands of an Argentine
Argentines around the world. Everywhere, in all functions. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) appointed Rafael Grossi as its new director. The IAEA is the UN‘s top nuclear power control body and the world’s leading international agency.
Rafael Grossi is a specialist in nuclear technologies, nuclear science and nuclear applications. Currently, the serves as Argentine ambassador to Austria. He holds a degree in Science Políticas, graduated from the UCA; holds a master’s degree in International Relations and a PhD in International History and Politics, both from the University of Geneva. Participated in the negotiations of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Comprehensive Nuclear – Test – Ban Treaty.
In his new role he will succeed Japanese Yukiya Amano, who passed away in July, when he was in his third term as director of the International Atomic Energy Agency. His candidacy was supported by the Government: “Grossi is a career diplomat with more than 35 years of professional experience in the field of non-proliferation and disarmament, and has held the most important positions on the international issue. He was Chief of Staff of the IAEA and Deputy Director General for Political Affairs,” said Chancellor Jorge Faurie.
Your role in the search for the ARA San Juan
Rafael Grossi was involved with the search for the submarineARA San Juan . In November 2017, he was responsible for transmitting to the Government news that the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (Ottce) had recorded an “anomalous, singular, short, violent and non-nuclear event, consistent with an explosion”. A year later, the submarine was found just over 15 kilometers from that position.
