Several studies reveal that one of the most salient features when defining Argentines is “narcissism”. Narcissism is the love that a human being directs towards himself. He refers to the Greek myth of Narcissus, who so loved his image reflected in the water, that one day he came so close to her and ended up drowning. Sigmund Freud, father of Psychoanalysis, introduced the concept of narcissism in 1914. In this text, the concept of narcissism becomes a necessary mode and condition for the structuring of personality.

Now... we have to ask ourselves. Why is narcissism defining us Argentines?

The fame of self-centered and proud dates back a long time. Perhaps today it will be diluted in a global world, where the individual concentrates on himself and devotes his time to contemplate his image. A clear example of what was said: our selfies. And to top it off reality confronts us and confirms that several of the “best” are Argentines!

With great pride we are part of the triumphs of Maradona, Messi, Paula Pareto, Fight Aymar, Manu Ginobili, Julio Boca, Daniel Barenboim, Martha Argerich, Jorge Luis Borges, Rene Favaloro, Pope Francis. In the different areas where each of us wants to find his idol, artist, sportsman, guru, there is an Argentinian as a reference who has contributed something beyond our borders.

Each of these people, while they stand out for their talents, works and achievements, leave a mark on us all. In turn, it is necessary to think that surely each of them has also given up a part of their narcissism, whether to pass a ball, to teach their music, to save a life or just to share...

In these days when it seems that only matters the individual and the love of oneself, let us not forget that even the “number ones” need one another to live...
