Grandmother's Recipes 2.0

According to a private survey, 99% of Argentines self-medicate, which is not good.

As we are

We all have at home our personalized medicine kit: analgesics, anti-inflammatory, antacids, anti-allergic. It's not uncommon for someone to ask in the office, “Who has an ibuprofen?”, and that a solidary companion immediately take one out of his drawer. In Argentina we are all doctors. Or we think so.

According to a private survey, 99 per cent of Argentines are self-medicating. This includes over-the-counter drugs and prescription medications, such as antibiotics and influenza drugs. That is, practically everyone, at some point, skip the visit to the doctor and go straight to the pharmacy.

Beyond the laws that are not complied with and the big business that this represents for laboratories, there are certain characteristics of our idiosyncrasy that have a lot to do with this behavior.

On the one hand, we think we know everything. We are the most alive: why are you going to the doctor if you can save the procedure and solve your problem without making the consultation. We also believe in magic recipes that we hear out there: take an ibuprofen after training, so that the next day we do not hurt everything, or before going to sleep if we overdo the drinks, to avoid hangover.

On the other hand, as always, “we tie it with wire.” Instead of looking for the root cause of our discomfort, we disguise it with some drug that lets us continue our lives, at least momentarily. The improvised solution, not definitive.

When it comes to health, the revivada does not govern. Let the decision be made by professionals, and if we want to venture into self-medication, let's better return to grandmother's well-known recipes.
