It seems to be getting harder and harder to talk about education in Argentina.
By all means, we receive statistics, news and experiences of failures, desertion, strikes, lack of updating, devaluation of the role of the educator, etc, etc, etc. The picture is getting darker and darker every year.
However, education is the opposite, it is hope, health, prosperity, growth.
Where do we fail, that we are not seeing our future as a society?
We will try to unravel the educational problems in order to shed light and together find hopeful answers.
The first thing to do is to be very clear about the objectives, the purpose of formal and informal education. What I expect from the educational outcome, what I see when I look ahead.
Many times I have heard: “I want my children to be creative, determined, played by their ideas”; I want my students to “read more, build thoughts, understand and express their own experiences…”.
Are we looking to open ourselves to new experiences? As adults, do we understand learning as an endless process of growth? And for this, do we generate spaces for creativity, for reading, for respecting choices even if they do not agree with pre-established ideas?
As a mom, I often find myself closing doors, making arbitrary decisions, calling for silence in the name of respect.
As teachers, we standardize knowledge, generalize processes, again calling for silence in the name of respect.
Clearly, our biggest problem is that we do not know what we are looking for and expecting from the educational process. If we are not clear on the objective, where will we go from here?
It’s like getting on a plane without knowing if it will be winter or summer when we get off, if I have to keep my eyes or my skis in my suitcase. Without knowing the objective, the journey will surely be dizzying and full of immediate urgencies, impossible to reach.
For the time being there are more questions than answers, the educational approach tends to be more a question than an absolute and defined truth, but the objective of education must be the development of creative, autonomous individualities, with social values of solidarity, empathy and growth. Each one will see which is his path and the role he must assume.
