Every wine year is unique and is remembered for the particular events that surround it, but 2020 will surely not be easily forgotten. With guidelines that defined it as unique he knew how to become exceptional and left a lot of information to analyze and wines to taste.
Thus we were able to find an “atypical” harvest by the measures taken by coronavirus and overtaking of harvesting by high temperatures, but “historical” for the health and quality of the grapes.
It was the year in which Argentina exported more than double the volume of litres of bulk wine than in the 2019 period, with volumes traded on the domestic market with an increase of almost 10% over the previous year, and a fifth consecutive year where turnover of the wine industry due to the fall in prices.
However, the wineries allowed themselves to produce some of the best wines in recent years and with the decision not to wait for the pandemic to pass, they advanced in the presentation of their products through the virtuality of the screens and the hasty development of the e-commerce .
So here, some of those chosen under the whim of personal taste that I hope to crave.
From Salta, El Porvenir de Cafayate winery presented its brand new Malbec born from the study of the soils of its farms, with a work on different plots where Paco Puga shows a singular expression and distinctive that speaks of the place where this wine comes from.
Another advance launch, for the North American market, was the one made by Andrea Tansini, winemaker for Doña Paula. A Rosé Malbec with a pale pink and bright appearance, with floral and fruity aromas with good intensity. With a voluptuous and refreshing palate thanks to its balanced acidity.
Averaging the year was also launched BIRA, a project that was born from the search for the Italian family roots of two friends. Santiago Bernasconi and Federico Isgró point to a Sangiovese vineyard planted in 1975 in the Uco Valley , at the height of the Andes. For now there are three cut wines with Sangiovese base and two Malbec based wines worthy of being tested.
The basketball player Fabricio Oberto, along with his friends winemakers Juan Longo and the brothers Héctor and Pablo Durigutti, presented three cutting reds made with grapes from the precious wine-growing corner of Mendoza, Las Compuertas in Luján de Cuyo. The name of the project is Old Wines , where each of the labels represent different stages of their friendship. Travel, motorcycles, music and stories, a summary of timeshare and the path traveled.
Patagonia marks its firm step from Schroeder Family with a Select Chardonnay. Imposing wine with pleasant aromas, with typicity of tropical fruits and white flowers, owner of a persistent acidity that shows it expressive and refreshing finish.
This year also left us punctuated wines in the world such as Pinot Noir of Patagonia from Bodega Chacra, which has just been chosen “Wine of the Year” in the most recent report by American critic James Suckling. It is Treinta y Dos, a unique vineyard wine, made from old vineyards planted in 1932 on a land covered with clay, sand and pebbles.
Córdoba also, through the Terra Camiare Winery, achieved a historic score with the limited edition of the Semillón Vintage 2018. The guide “Descorchados 2021”, made by the prestigious international wine critic Patricio Tapia, awarded 94 points to the Socavones Chapter I Semillón Vintage 2018 of the Winemaker Gabriel Campana, making it the highest scoring product in the history of Córdoba and placing it first in the ranking of this strain in Argentina.
Finally from the Calamuchita Valley in Córdoba , Bodega Famiglia Furfaro presented its First Gran Reserva with 24 months in oak, a blend of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that place the viticulture of this province on the map of national production.
A 2020 with so much to try and so few lines to describe, only enable everyone to experience in the art of discovering what a historic year left for humanity.
