On April 29, the largest flood suffered by the city of Santa Fe is remembered. It claims the memory of those who could not against the river.
Just by remembering many floods suffered by the capital of Santa Fe can be remembered. There is a bad joke that is used here, with that ignorant Argentine prejudice on the intelligence of the Spanish, which says: “You had to be so that you can think of it. found a city on such a geographical extent.” It's just, really, if you look from the sky at the space where the city of Santa Feis, it's scary. Water can be seen everywhere and, indeed, it is hard to imagine that a city of half a million people could have been erected here.
The depression of the terrain in this region needs strong defenses so that the water from the river does not enter the city, in times of flooding. However, the blame for the flood of April 29, 2003 should not be cast on geography or on Juan de Garay. It was the local and provincial rulers of that time, who acted negligently and did not avoid something that could be prevented. His idleness led to loss of possessions, depression, anguish and death.
A bill was recently introduced in the provincial legislature so that on 29 April of each year be theDay of Memory of the Flooded People. If passed, the law shall establish an administrative holidayin the city . In addition, the regulation will urge the Ministry of Education to include the date in the school calendar at the different levels of the provincial education system.
The date became a whole Santafesino emblem of the struggle for memory and against impunity of the political leaders of the flood. Sad flood that hit the western neighborhoods and whose number of fatalities are estimated by social organizations at 158.
