The Santafesina town of Villa Ocampo, the heart of the Ramsar Site “Jaaukanigás”, holds the National Wetlands Festival. It is organized by the local municipality and already has six editions. It is usually done in the first months of the year . For obvious reasons, its 2021 edition has not yet been set.
The aim of the event is to raise awareness about the sustainable use of wetlands and promote ecotourism as an economic activity within the Ramsar Site. For this reason, during the celebration, the Forum of Wetlands of the Argentine Littoral and the meeting of the Federal Environment Council (COFEMA) Coastal Region (NEA) are incorporated. It has the presence of important national officials and from the provinces of Northeast Argentina, related to the theme of the environment and tourism.
Sports, meals, competitions, fairs and ecotourism tours within the wetland are also part of the activities. As a special attraction, Villa Ocampo promotes its typical gastronomy with the Fish Empanada Fair. They say that in Villa Ocampo are the best in the country, but they don't just keep that, they offer what they call a Festival of Flavors. So, when the next edition is done, we'll have to go try empanadas and something else.
Also, as in any national holiday, live shows are offered. In the case of this party, they are free and made outdoors on Av. San Martín de Villa Ocampo.
The agenda of the festival is completed with sports competitions, literary and photo contests, forums, seminars and exhibitions related to environmental preservation and ecotourism activities. With great success, all this seeks to promote the riches of the region.
Flora and fauna watching, cycling and horseback riding around the wetland are just some of the many things that Villa Ocampo organizes that weekend. But, in such a great meeting, there is an action of the host people very worthy of note. Villa Ocampo opens its doors to neighboring towns to present with stands or exhibitions what their strengths are. In this way, tourists arriving from all over the country can see the attractions of the region, beyond the wetland itself. Thus, for example, in the last edition, the government of Avellaneda presented its tourist offer. The strengths of its presentation were rural tourism and the promotion of local products. And the same happened with other towns such as the small but cozy Florence.
Villa Ocampo is a city strategically located in the heart of Jaaukanigás , in the northeast of Santa Fe. This meeting is therefore an excellent opportunity to discover one of the three Santa Fe wetlands declared a Ramsar Site. This is being valued as an emerging destination by the country's main ecotourism agencies and has the highest biodiversity in the whole province. In addition, the National Wetland Festival “Jaaukanigás” (“water people” in Abipon language), as is its full name, has unique characteristics in the country. environmental and ecotourism. This national holiday is, then, also an opportunity to know the state of the situation and diagnosis of wetlands in our country . Experiences of planning and management, proposals and actions multiply over a weekend in Santa Fe. At the same time, thousands of people celebrate meeting in the Argentine interior.
