Carnavalito: everyone to dance

Carnivalito is a collective dance prior to European colonization in America. We tell you what it is.

The friendly, busy and showy carnival or carnivalito is an ancient collective dance. With primitive figures, he danced in America since before the discovery. Owner of extraordinary vitality, he has endured through centuries. It is still practiced spontaneously today in northwestern Argentina and  Bolivia , both in its ancient and modern forms.

Carnivalito is an  autochthonous American dance, born in pre-Hispanic times in the domains of the  Inca . Primitively it was danced as a collective dance, without couples, with the few figures common to almost all archaic dances: rounds, rows, streamers, etc. The primitive forms of carnivalite are also practiced in  Jujuy ,  Salta ,  Catamarca and  La Rioja .

In many cities of  Salta   and Jujuy  people currently dance in couples. The modern or salon carnivalito is full of colorful and lively figures that spread the desire to dance. Meanwhile, the orchestra of quenas, charangos, guitars and bass drum (or box or “tinya”) floods the air with the cheerful typical melodies.
