Three hearts that keep beating

 National pride : despite the pandemic, Garrahan Hospital   performed three heart transplants   . Thus, it became one of the only three pediatric hospitals in the world that realized these types of practices during  isolation . The Cardiac Transplantation and Peripheral Vascular Surgery service transplanted three hearts during the month of April. The patients were two teenagers aged 13 and a child of 3 years. Everyone had diagnoses of dilated cardiomyopathy and needed a transplant to live. In this way, Garrahan Hospital reached 80 cardiac transplants in the last 20 years.

But that's not all. In a statement, the institution explained that, between 11 March and 12 May, “in the national reference centre,  ten patients  aged between 24 months and 13 years — whose only possible treatment was transplantation — received transplants from 11 March to 12 May.   heart  (3), kidney (3) and liver (4) ”.

This was made possible because they were able to adapt the organization and operation of health teams to ensure the safety of interventions in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.  Diagnostic tests for COVID-19  were first performed for both donors and patients. Adequate protection of the health teams in charge of the operations and the reduction of the number of people who regularly participate in these interventions was also ensured.

Thus, ten boys and girls today have the opportunity to move on with their lives. Thanks to the effort of the medical staff who continued to work despite adversities and, of course, to the solidarity of those who  donated  organs so that all this was possible.
