It is vitally important to understand how  responsible  we should be when deciding to have a “pet”: with this we are making a commitment to have the  pet   in our home and share life with it .

It would be very useful to advise us previously by a professional in the area, as we have to take into account several points:

What motivated us to have it? How company, fashion or as a guardian of the home? What feature will the chosen pet have? Quiet, active, very active? Type of food, behavior and health according to race, habitat space, visits to the veterinarian, vaccination, food, hygiene.

We may define Responsible Holding as a series of actions to be performed by the owner or holder, and obligations that limit the unrestricted exercise of the owner's right, in pursuit of the welfare of the animal:

  1. Meet basic needs: all animals have to have access to a good living. Providing water, appropriate food and a place of shelter. Enabling them to exercise and develop their normal behavior.
  2. Perform proper sanitary management. Including periodic visits to the veterinarian and keeping up to date the health card,  vaccination , deworming and hygiene.
  3. Instruction and socialization: for good behavior, its language must be understood and socialization with other animals and people should be encouraged. Correcting unwanted behaviors and stimulating play and entertainment activities.
  4. Registration and identification: Each animal must bear its name and its data, which in turn will be transmitted to a record that allows to track the traceability, location and tracing thereof.
  5. Sterilization: is a surgery that prevents the reproduction of the animal and therefore helps control the population of pets. They are also helped to live a longer, healthier life and with less health risks.
  6. Protect and care for the environment in which they live, as animals can cause damage to other animals, people, other goods and the environment. That is why it is important to know and prevent these risks.
  7. Know and apply current regulations. There are several regulations and it is an obligation to know and respect them. For example, National Animal Protection Act No. 14.346, which provides that anyone who mistreats, harasses, acts of cruelty, or kills an animal, shall be punished by imprisonment from 15 days to one year's imprisonment.

It is important to understand that we are  responsible for a living being  who will repay us with  affection and loyalty all his life , giving us all his love.

Behaving responsibly in the possession of our beloved pets, we will understand that coexistence with them is more beautiful, and that they provide a better quality of life to their owners.

What are the advantages of having a pet?

You don't have to be a scientist to know that having a little animal at home is an inexhaustible source of tenderness. Pets are a great company for those who live alone and it is inevitable to sketch a smile every time they receive us when we get home. But in addition to these more than known benefits, pets can also help improve your health.

  • Living with pets at a young age strengthens the immune system and reduces the risk of allergies or respiratory diseases, among other problems.
  • Walking your dog is a good physical exercise and also helps reduce the risk of heart disease.
  • Various research suggests that the mere fact of stroking or playing with an animal has a relaxing effect that helps to reduce the heart rate.
  • Having a pet and sharing our lives with it causes increased release of oxytocin, the hormone of happiness, which helps to avoid stress, sadness and depression.
  • They are an excellent excuse to start a conversation with someone, so they also contribute to improving our social life.
  • Children who have pets from young learn to respect animals and care for them responsibly. In addition to hours of fun and mutual affection.
  • With appropriate training are excellent therapeutic companions. Labradors, for example, are used to help people with various disabilities, both motor and mental. It is also possible to train dogs to detect a significant decrease in glucose and help patients with  diabetes .
  • They are an unlimited source of happiness, with their eccentricities and antics make us laugh and along with the rest of the benefits improve our life expectancy.

Having a pet is a responsibility, but it is very well paid for with countless benefits for your physical and mental health. If you had this idea fluttering in your mind and you are willing to do it responsibly, do not hesitate. Having a little animal is the best decision you can make.
