How to appreciate an abstract painting?
Small tips to enjoy this wonderful pictorial genre.
Art and Literature
We understand by abstraction the painting that does not have recognizable images, which is based on pure elements of this art: color planes, lines, textures, plots. The metaphor of abstract painting can be like in music: you may not know the language of the song or know anything about music, but it still excites you. The viewer should be predisposed and enjoy the shapes, colors, rhythms (the way in which the elements are distributed on the fabric and create a visual vibration, an aesthetic fact) to allow himself to be sensitized. This composition proposed by the artist has a reminiscence extracted from the essence of the forms that surround us and are everyday to us. What an abstract artist tries is to strip every recognizable element, leaving only its essence visible. It's like making clear what we don't usually see but what does to the structure of the object (which does not have to be recognizable), for example, of a landscape, a human figure, etc. Remember that abstraction, for those who begin in painting, is tempting: its realization only seems to imply intuitively staining a fabric, and thus, it can happen (hopefully) that causes something of interest. But it is much more feasible that it provokes a bad experience in the observer, which can even reach the limit of anger or distancing this type of paint. We are used to the story and the story, we look for a recognizable story in the painting, but from that perspective we should not observe the painting: so it will be difficult to connect and enjoy it. You have to face the abstract work by observing it with a general (peripheral) look, in this way you can receive the kind of sensation, energy, calm, tension, rest, joy, drama, introversion, suggestion of depth, feeling of amplitude to a space, etc. The important thing, as always, is to enjoy the work without asking anything. First skin and heart. Finally, something upside down. Art, @rte, ArT.
