Go to sectionRecently, a large area of the bottom of the Setúbal lagoon remained in sight. Many Santafesinos violated the quarantine to contemplate it.
The historic downhill of the Paraná River, which set a record 55 centimetres high in Santa Fe, has an impact on the Setúbal Lagoon. The water mirror, symbol of the city , flatly changed its landscape.
If you go through different areas of the lagoon, you can clearly observe this new natural setting . What is called the “lagoon bottom” is emerging. This surface, mainly made up of loamy materials and clays, when dried because it is exposed to the sun, shrinks and cracks are generated in the terrain. This reflects the porosity of sediments. When these are deposited on the lagoon bottom, the porosity is high and those spaces are occupied by water . On the contrary, when drying, part of that volume resolves with cracks. This surface, now exposed , is usually covered by two or three meters of water, with the 60s being the last moment in history when an image similar to the current one was observed.
Before this landscape, more than a Saint Fesino who could not stand the confinement decided to go for a walk through this very bottom of the Setúbal. And not just for a walk: in local media photos of vans were published touring the background .
Faced with this attack of curiosity that many Santafesinos suffered, specialists claimed that the practice is very risky . The sediment between the cracks of the Setúbal lagoon remains hydrated in depth. Therefore, the lands that are drying out are not safe to travel. The surface dry layer can crack with the weight of a car and lead to subsidence.
In addition, the continuous flat bottom of the lagoon is interrupted by the dredging pits that were made for the alteos of the neighborhood El Pozo, the Technological Park and the University City, as well as as an area of the West Costanera, to cover naturally muddy margins with sands. These wells , which are currently occupied by water, are very deep and dangerous for people to approach, since their walls can collapse like a natural ravine of rivers.
Santafesinos : Do we need to continue to recommend that they stay at home? The city has not been infected with COVID-19 for many days. If we keep doing things right, all this confinement will be over soon . These disobedient practices and this reckless curiosity about the abnormalities of Setúbal do nothing but complicate things. The recommendation is to keep taking care of us , for the sake of everyone and that of our nature.
